How to Plan Your Hike
Our tool uses a proven hiking model to give you an accurate time estimate. Here's how to get started.
Enter Trail Data
Input the total distance of your hike and the total elevation gain for the trail.
Select Your Pace
Choose a pacing profile that best matches your fitness level: Leisurely, Moderate, or Brisk.
Analyze the Plan
The dashboard instantly calculates your estimated hiking time, arrival time, and other key metrics for your adventure.
The Science Behind the Estimate
Our calculator is powered by Naismith's Rule, a time-tested formula used by hikers and mountaineers for over a century to estimate expedition times.
The Basic Formula
Naismith's Rule calculates time based on two key components:
- Horizontal Time: The time it takes to cover the flat distance of the hike. Our calculator uses your selected pace (e.g., 5 km/h) for this.
- Vertical Time: An additional amount of time added for the effort of climbing. The standard rule adds 1 minute for every 10 meters (or 1 hour for every 600m) of elevation gain.
What It Means for You
This method provides a realistic estimate because it accounts for the fact that hiking uphill is significantly slower than walking on flat ground. By combining both horizontal and vertical components, it creates a much more accurate prediction than simply looking at distance alone.
Features of the Analyzer
We've included extra metrics to help you plan your hike safely and effectively.
Live Terrain Profile
The dynamic terrain visualizer gives you a conceptual look at your hike's profile, adjusting its "peak" based on the elevation gain you enter.
Estimated Arrival Time
Based on the current time and the calculated hike duration, the tool projects your estimated time of arrival, helping you plan for daylight and transportation.
Break & Calorie Estimates
The calculator provides a rough estimate of recommended breaks (1 per hour) and calories burned, reminding you to plan for rest and nutrition.
Frequently Asked Questions
Get quick answers to common questions about estimating your hiking time.
Does this calculator account for the descent (going downhill)?
The classic Naismith's Rule, which this calculator is based on, does not explicitly factor in time adjustments for descents. It assumes that the time saved going downhill on gentle slopes is offset by the increased difficulty of steep descents. For most typical day hikes, this provides a reliable and safe estimate.
What other factors should I consider when planning my hike?
This calculator provides a crucial baseline, but you should always consider other factors. These include: weather conditions (rain, snow, or heat can slow you down), trail conditions (muddy or rocky terrain takes longer), pack weight (a heavy backpack will slow your pace), and the fitness of your entire group. Always plan for the pace of the slowest member.
How accurate is the calorie estimate?
The calorie calculation is a very rough estimate based on an average person's weight and effort. The actual number of calories you burn depends on many personal factors like your body weight, age, sex, fitness level, and the weight of your pack. It is included primarily as a reminder to pack enough food and water for your journey.
