Why Time Zone Conversion is Tricky

Calculating time across the globe is more than just adding or subtracting a few hours. Our tool handles the complexities for you.

  • Daylight Saving Time (DST): Different regions start and end DST on different dates. Our calculator has these rules built-in, preventing common one-hour errors in your conversions.
  • Fractional Time Zones: Some locations, like parts of India or Australia, use 30 or 45-minute offsets from standard time zones. We account for these unique cases.

What is UTC?

Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) is the primary time standard by which the world regulates clocks and time. It is the successor to Greenwich Mean Time (GMT). All time zones are expressed as an offset from UTC (e.g., New York is UTC-4 during summer).

Frequently Asked Questions

Get quick answers to common questions about time zones and our converter.

Why does the time difference change sometimes?

The time difference between two locations can change because of Daylight Saving Time (DST). For example, the difference between London and New York is 5 hours in the winter, but it can temporarily become 4 hours in March when the US starts DST before the UK does. Our calculator automatically handles these shifts.

What is the difference between a time zone and a time offset?

A time offset is a static difference from UTC, like UTC-5. A time zone, like "America/New_York," is a region that uses a specific standard time and also includes all the rules for Daylight Saving Time. Using time zones is much more accurate than using simple offsets.

Why can't I find my city in the list?

The IANA database uses major cities to represent entire regions that share the same time zone rules. You should select the major city that is in the same time zone as your location. For example, if you are in Boston, you would select "America/New_York," as both cities are in the US Eastern Time Zone.
